Louis O'Neill - Experienced Attorney and Diplomat
Mr. Louis F. O’Neill has worked hard in both the public and private sectors to promote freedom, peace, human rights and stability. Mr. Louis F. O’Neill has a history of fighting for basic democratic rights in Russia and Eastern Europe. An expert in international security policy, international law and Eastern European and Russian affairs, Louis O’Neill understands the issues facing the former Soviet Union and former Soviet Republics and how they affect U.S. security. An advocate for democracy, democratic processes and pluralism, Louis O’Neill has led efforts to ensure free and fair elections and uncensored media in the former Soviet republic of Moldova.
In 2005 Louis O’Neill was selected as a non-political expert member of the Policy Planning Staff at the U.S. State Department, where he helped formulate policy pertaining to Russia and other former Soviet states. Mr. Lou O’Neill has also previously served as the Special Adviser for Russian Affairs in the U.S. State Department, where, as a White House Fellow, he reported to Secretary of State Colin Powell. Lou O’Neill is currently a Term Member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
Louis O’Neill has lived and worked in Moscow for a number of years as a journalist, consultant and attorney. Following his undergraduate career at Stanford University, Louis O’Neill also spent a year in Moscow as a Fulbright Scholar. Mr. Louis F. O’Neill also spent time in the Russian capital working on legal and policy issues with the Russian Duma on behalf of Harvard University’s Institute for International Development. Additionally, Lou O’Neill worked as a graphic designer and journalist for The Moscow Times newspaper when it first began publishing.
In his free time, Ambassador Louis O’Neill enjoys reading, music, travel and cycling. While an undergraduate, Louis O’Neill was a member of the Stanford Cycling team and served as the squad’s Co-Captain during his junior year.
Louis O’Neill speaks English and Russian fluently and speaks Romanian well.
